Michael Torres to Face Mark Alexander in Main Event

The second installment of the Wednesday Night Fight Series at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, New Jersey, is now set for September 14th, with welterweights Michael Torres (13-2, 7 KOs) and Mark Alexander (10-5, 1 KO) meeting in the main event of the evening. Also on hand that night will be “Irish” Micky Ward, focus of Academy Award nominated film The Fighter, and former WBO World Heavyweight Champion Ray Mercer, who will both attend the show as special guests.

Torres is a Jersey City native who started his career with 13 consecutive wins before suffering back-to-back decision losses in his last two fights. The scrappy welterweight has fought just twice over the past two years, but he now looks to regain the form he had at the onset of his professional career. Opposite him in the ring on September 14th will be a formidable opponent in Alexander, an English native who last fought in October of 2010 when he was knocked out by Ryan Barrett in London.

A stable of rising local prospects will also be featured on the card that night, beginning with the highly popular and aggressive Vinny O’Brien (2-1, 2 KOs) of East Hanover, who will battle an opponent to be named in a four frame welterweight pairing. The first three professional bouts for O’Brien took place at neighboring Prudential Center, where the exciting young fighter put on three non-stop and entertaining scraps in front of a platoon of supporters.

Additional bouts on this card include Newark resident Carlos Vinan (10-9, 2 KOs) facing fellow Brick City native Wanzell Ellison (4-0, 3 KOs) in a six round lightweight affair, while Camden’s Max Alexander (14-5-2, 2 KOs) will travel north to take on spoiler William Bailey (10-20-2, 5 KOs) of Virginia in a six round cruiserweight pairing. Two more featured fights are a Newark middleweight encounter between Eddie Edmonds (2-1-2, 1 KO) and Thomas Baldwin (2-0-1, 1 KO), as well as a four round heavyweight showdown that includes Newark native Tyabb Beale (4-3, 1 KO) and Taffo Asongwed (2-8-7, 0 KOs) of Montreal, Canada. Also slated to appear on this show are New Jersey junior middleweight Thomas LaManna (4-0, 3 KOs), Marlboro lightweight Tyrone Luckey (4-1, 4 KOs), Carteret heavyweight John Lennox (6-0, 3 KOs) and New York heavyweight Jon Bolden (2-1, 2 KOs).
