Defending W-League Champions Defeat Cougars Sunday Afternoon

Pacific Palisades, Calif. (Monday, April 6, 2009) – The Pali Blues Soccer Club (2-0-0) were tested by a quality Real Colorado Cougars (1-1-0) side on Sunday afternoon, but the defending USL W-League champions persevered to take a 2-0 result at the Stadium by the Sea. After opening the season with a pair of home victories, the Blues will now hit the road to play their next four contests before returning to the Palisades on Tuesday, June 23rd, to host the Vancouver Whitecaps (0-0-1).

“Once again, it was not the prettiest match,” Blues head coach Charlie Naimo commented. “For a while, there we were putting passes together and we came out of our first two matches 2-0, which was the goal/challenge knowing we would not be full strength until June.”

While every game in the W-League is a battle, Naimo took special note of the aggressive play on Sunday afternoon.

“It was one of the most physical matches I have ever been a part of, and it took a while for us to find the right system to secure the win,” he reflected.

The Blues edged Real Colorado with an 11-7 shot advantage, but it would not be until the 35th minute that they would put a ball into the back of the net. Mexican National Team forward Iris Mora made a great run through the center of the Cougar defense onto a perfectly timed feed from New Zealand National Team midfielder Kirsty Yallop. It appeared that Mora was being pulled down from behind, but she managed to shake loose and slip a ball into the Real Colorado goal.

With the adrenalin of that knock still flowing through the Blues attack, Canadian National Team midfielder Kara Lang rose above a group of Cougar defenders to head in a 40-yard driven free kick from Mora just two minutes later, giving her club a 2-0 advantage.

The Blues then buckled down the rest of the way to secure the 2-0 result with goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek taking the shutout.

The Blues will now take to the road for their next four games before returning to the Stadium by the Sea for a 7:00 p.m. pairing with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Tuesday, June 23rd. Tickets for that match-up can be purchased today by calling (310) 264-4649.
