Bellator 59 Preliminary Card Results

Results from the untelevised portion of Bellator Fighting Championships' final card of its fifth season. This show took place at the Palladium Ballroom at Caesars in Atlantic City.

Brandon Saling (5-5) vs. Gregory Milliard (2-2)
This evening of fights officially got underway with this middleweight confrontation, as Milliard looked to use his wide frame and reach advantage over Saling. Milliard maintained control for the majority of the three rounds of competition, using a gifted grappling game to garner and sustain control when the fight got to the canvas. Saling was able to land some heavy-handed strikes to start the third frame, but his Aruban counterpart soon worked it back to the ground and eventually rolled to a flush 30-27 unanimous decision victory.

“It would have been nice, a kick boxer finishing with a submission. But winning is winning, and that was the point.” – Gregory Milliard on the win

Brylan Van Artsdalen (5-3) vs. Scott Heckman (9-3)
The action was immediate in this featherweight pairing, with an instantaneous grapple occurring at the opening bell. While the two fighters were battling for the upper hand on their feet, Heckman slammed his opponent to the canvas and worked his way into a guillotine choke. Van Artsdalen was able to shake loose, but he would not be safe for long. The duo stood back up after the submission attempt was unsuccessful, where Heckman was able to counter a takedown attempt and apply a standing guillotine. He then quickly scored a tapout by Van Artsdalen, coming at 1:38 of the first round.

“The submission came off his shot. That’s a bravo or guillotine choke. He went to take me down, and I just tightened it right up.” – Scott Heckman on the finish

Lucas Pimenta (5-0) vs. Doug Gordon (11-12)
Fighting at a catch weight of 175 pounds, Pimenta needed little time to take care of 22-match veteran Gordon. After dropping his opposition early with a straight right hand, Pimenta pounced and fired off a series of elbows until the lights went out on Gordon. The official time of the knockout was just 40 seconds into the first frame, with Pimenta improving his perfect professional record to 5-0.

“My plan was to come in and knock him out. This is my first fight in Bellator, and I wanted to win impressively.” – Lucas Pimenta on his game plan

LeVon Maynard (12-8) vs. Chris Wing (3-2)
In a battle of two powerful welterweights, this bout would go the distance. Each round in this affair featured some entertaining stand-up exchanges, with Maynard using a slick Muay Thai game to counter the rolling punches of Wing. The second and third frames each played out in similar fashion, beginning with strikes from the standing position before Maynard used a ground and pound game to take the points from each round. While the will and fight displayed by Wing was impressive, Maynard was able to roll to a unanimous decision win with tallies of 30-27 (2x) and 30-26 from the cageside judges.

“You’ve only seen a small snippet of my striking repertoire. But next fight, I’ll definitely show more and look good while I do it." - LeVon Maynard on the improvement of his striking game

Karl Amoussou (13-4-2) vs. Jesus Martinez (6-2)
This scrap started with the two fighters pacing and tossing strikes in the direction of the opposition, with each competitor carefully planning his advances. No one had gained an advantage in the exchanges through the opening two minutes until Amoussou squarely landed a head kick, and the Paris native then rushed his opponent and quickly took his back. From that position, he began to pepper Martinez with some swinging hooks until it became evident that the Philadelphia resident would be unable to respond to the blows. The referee in charge was forced to stop the bout at 2:26 of the first frame, giving Amoussou the TKO victory.

“I really want to say one thing. To all the welterweights: You’re going to have a hard time with me. I’m going to come, and I’m going to destroy you all.” - Message by Karl Amoussou to the welterweight division
