Michael Perez Will Meet Omar Figueroa Jr. on January 6th
Newark, New Jersey, native Michael Perez (15-0-1, 9 KOs) turned a lot of heads in 2011, and he will now look to start 2012 with a bang when he takes on Omar Figueroa Jr. (13-0-1, 10 KOs) in the co-feature of a ShoBox card on Friday, January 6th. The bout, which will occur at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, will be a 10-round affair for the WBO Inter-Continental Youth Lightweight Title and go down just before a main event pairing between Luis Ramos Jr. and Raymundo Beltran for the NABA USA Lightweight Title.
The last time that Perez stepped in the ring was in Puerto Rico this past October, dropping Tyrone Harris (24-9, 16 KOs) three times in the second round en route to a TKO stoppage victory. Collectively, he picked up four knockout wins in 2011, and he now hopes to continue that momentum into 2012. Nicknamed the Artist, Perez turned professional just over three years ago after a successful amateur career that included a National Golden Gloves Championship in 2008.
A fighter of Mexican descent, 22-year-old Figueroa became a professional boxer in June of 2008 and started his career with eight consecutive TKO victories. Residing in Weslaco, Texas, the heavy-handed lightweight fought three times in 2011, picking up a pair of knockouts to go with a unanimous decision win. Two of his three bouts this past year were away from the Lone Star State, where the young fighter has competed for the majority of his professional career.
Both of these undefeated combatants are under the Golden Boy banner, which is the promoter for this event. Additional undercard bouts are expected this week.
