GK1 Sports Partners with Jay DeMerit

Company Adds Inspirational Documentary “Rise & Shine” to its DVD Library

GK1 Sports has made available in its online store Rise & Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story, a highly inspirational documentary that chronicles the unlikely journey of U.S. National Team defender Jay DeMerit to the top ranks of world soccer. Once he was overlooked by all clubs in the 2002 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft, DeMerit headed overseas to England with $1800 in his pocket and began an improbable run that eventually saw him reach the English Premier League (EPL) and don the colors of his nation in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“Jay truly exemplifies the American spirit and heart, and Rise & Shine captures that in this documentary,” GK1 Sports CEO Tony Meola commented. “His story is one that proves you can accomplish anything if you truly put your mind to it, and we know anyone who watches this film will be amazed by the will Jay has shown in achieving his professional dreams.”

Not one to put attention on himself, DeMerit says the inspirational messaging behind this movie is its true meaning.

"I am thrilled to partner with Tony and GK1 Sports in getting the film out,” he remarked. “It's a story that is much bigger than a single person. It's about the message of hard work, belief and striving to achieve your dreams. Rise & Shine!"

A native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, DeMerit had an accomplished college career at the University of Illinois at Chicago, but he nonetheless did not hear his name announced at the 2002 MLS SuperDraft. However, he was far from giving up on a dream to play professional soccer, and he decided to head to England the following year to pursue his mission. He then landed a spot on the roster for Southall, a club that played on the ninth tier of the English Leagues. He next moved up to Northwood in 2004, and it was during a preseason match with the seventh tier side that he captured the eye of Watford manager Ray Lewington. Impressed with his skill set, Lewington offered DeMerit a one-year contract with his team. He remained with the club through the 2010 EPL season, also earning his way onto the U.S. National Team along the way in 2007. He has since capped 25 times with his national team side, and his career came full circle when he returned to North America in 2011 to join the Vancouver Whitecaps FC of MLS.

The motivational story of this journey is thoroughly depicted in Rise & Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story, and its theme is sure to strike a chord with anyone who enjoys watching someone overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.
