Den of Lions Win in Battle of Newark Clubs
The Warriors were unable to bounce back from an early penalty kick
Newark, N.J. (Sunday, May 31, 2009) – The Ironbound Warriors (0-1-0) had their opportunities today in a fairly well-crafted affair with the Newark Den of Lions (1-0-0), but the U-23 affiliate of the Newark Ironbound Express of the USL Premier Development League were unable to make the most of their chances. After 90 hard fought minutes today at Lubetkin Field, the Den of Lions handed the Warriors a 2-0 defeat in season opening action of the MAPS Premier League.
The Warriors were the aggressors for the majority of this highly contested match, but the Den of Lions saw great goalkeeping play from netminder Chris Duggan to take the victory. Duggan turned away six second half shot attempts from the Warrior offense to provide tremendous stability in their defensive half of the field.
The game was scoreless this afternoon until a foul called in the Warrior box resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for the Den of Lions. Forward Renan Lopes did the honors for his club and put the ball away in the 23rd minute, gaining a 1-0 advantage. The Warriors upped their offensive approach in hopes of notching an equalizer, but Duggan and the Lion defense did just enough to keep the slate clean the rest of the way. Lion forward Julian Valeric gave his team breathing room in the 80th minute when he rebounded a shot off the frame and scored an unassisted knock, and the goal seemed to deflate the Warrior morale.
