Team Finishes Weekend with Win over Western Mass
The Wildcats finished a tough weekend with a victory
West Windsor, N.J. (Monday, June 1, 2009) – The New Jersey Wildcats (2-1-0) hit the road for a pair of matches in New England this past weekend, finishing up the busy slate by edging the Western Mass Lady Pioneers (0-4-0) on Sunday evening by a tally of 2-1. The Wildcats will now head to Connecticut for a Friday night showdown with the Passion (1-1-1), and the team will make their 2009 home debut this Sunday when they host the Boston Renegades (2-1-1) for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff at Mercer County Community College.
“I feel that we had a pretty successful weekend,” Wildcats head coach Dave Barbour commented. “We came out a little flat on Saturday because of the long trip, but we regrouped and forced a close match. During the second match, we were strong in both our tactics and our fitness, and I was happy with how we played.”
Facing four road contests to open the season can be taxing on a team, but the Wildcats have proven to be a very resilient club so far this year.
“Overall, you have to be satisfied with our effort so far this season,” Barbour continued. “We have taken six points in our first three games, and you have to be pretty happy with that.”
Despite falling behind by a count of 3-0 when they faced Boston on Saturday evening, the Wildcats refused to back down from the Renegades. In the final eight minutes of the game, a pair of balls ended up in the Boston net to close the gap to 3-2. Time, however, was not on the side of the Wildcats, and the final whistle would eventually blow before they were given the opportunity to hit an equalizer.
With little time to rest their bodies, the Wildcats proved to be a very fit group when they kicked off against the Lady Pioneers on Sunday. Forward Alli D’Amico found La Salle graduate Kristen Hextall for a go-ahead notch in the 13th minute of the match, but Western Mass striker Kelly Kuss answered with an equalizer in the 31st minute. The Wildcats then buckled down for the remainder of the affair, and UPenn product Jessica Fuccello would provide the game-winner in the 71st minute by recording a solo knock.
After their road contest on Friday, the Wildcats are set to make their home debut this Sunday when they host the Renegades for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff. The following Friday, they will host Western Mass at 7:00 p.m. and will attempt to set the New Jersey state juggling record at halftime of that game.
