“The Magic Man” Doing the Honors this Monday
Malignaggi will throw the first pitch for his hometown Brooklyn Cyclones
Brooklyn, N.Y. (Thursday, July 23, 2009) – Former IBF World Junior Welterweight champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi will do the honors of throwing the ceremonial first pitch for his hometown Brooklyn Cyclones this Monday when the club hosts Italian Heritage Night at KeySpan Park. Malignaggi will get the game started immediately before the Cyclones host the Aberdeen IronBirds at 7:00 p.m.
Malignaggi is currently training for an August 22nd superfight in Houston with former IBF World Lightweight champion Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz, but the speedy puncher is known for taking the time to lend a helping hand to professional sports organizations in the metropolitan area. Among the other teams that he has supported include the New Jersey Ironmen, where he was twice the honorary captain for the professional indoor soccer team that formerly played at Prudential Center in Newark.
The Brooklyn Cyclones are the Short Season A affiliate of the New York Mets and play in the New York-Penn League. The team was moved to Brooklyn from Ontario in 2000 and currently plays at KeySpan Park just off the Coney Island boardwalk. Including their time north of the border, the Cyclones have won seven division titles and a pair of league championships (1986, 2001). Among the notable alumni that have laced up in Brooklyn include Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Scott Kazmir.
Malignaggi (26-2, 5 KOs) last stepped in the ring in April and took a unanimous decision over Chris Fernandez in the undercard of the Carl Froch-Jermain Taylor fight at the Foxwoods resort in Connecticut. The Brooklyn native is currently working to trim down to the 138.5 pound catch weight that has been set for his August 22nd fight with Diaz.
“I didn’t want to agree to it, but they didn’t really leave me much of a choice,” he said about the decision. “They had more leverage with the negotiations because he’s signed to Golden Boy. I’m not in a position to dictate.”
For those unable to make it to Houston for the fight, it will hit the HBO airwaves on August 22nd at 9:45 p.m. EST.
