UFC Returning to New Jersey in February

Staff Report by Resolution Sports

The Super Bowl will not be the only major attraction coming to town during the first weekend of February, with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) confirming its return to New Jersey for Saturday, February 1st. Headlined by a pair of world title fights, UFC 169 will take place at Prudential Center in Newark, the fourth stop by the promotion at the six-year-old venue.

“We put together a fight worthy of Super Bowl weekend," UFC President Dana White stated. “It's the fight that everyone has been waiting for - champion vs. champion - Dominick Cruz vs. Renan Barao for the 135-pound title. Dominick Cruz is the reigning champion and hasn’t lost a fight in six years. He takes on the interim bantamweight champion, Renan Barao, who’s been on a tear with a 30-fight win streak and hasn't lost in eight years. Two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, two of the best 135-pounders on earth. The world is finally going to find out who is the undisputed 135-pound champion!

“Plus, the unstoppable Jose Aldo takes on the man everyone has been waiting to see him fight, Ricardo Lamas. Aldo has been the 145-pound champion since 2009, and he’s torn through the featherweight division. But Ricardo Lamas has heavy hands, great wrestling and will be the toughest test of Aldo's career.”

Also slated for action on that card is a heavyweight feature bout that pits former UFC Champion Frank Mir against former Strikeforce titleholder Alistair Overeem.

The last stop by the UFC at Prudential Center was earlier this year in April for UFC 159, a card that was headlined by a Light Heavyweight Championship Fight between reigning titleholder Jon “Bones” Jones and Chael Sonnen. In that match-up, Jones earned a first round stoppage victory over Sonnen due to unanswered punches and elbows.

Tickets for UFC 169: Cruz vs. Barao go on sale this Friday, November 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. With prices ranging from $50-$400, tickets will be available for purchase at the Prudential Center Box Office and also through Ticketmaster.
