Harrisburg Goalkeeper Takes a Look Back at the Season that Was
Harrisburg, Pa. (Tuesday, September 1, 2009) – When the Richmond Kickers hoisted the USL-2 championship trophy this past Saturday after defeating the Charlotte Eagles by a tally of 3-1 in the league title game, Harrisburg City Islanders goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski could not help but think that should be him and his teammates celebrating. It was just the previous week that a goal in the 120th minute by Richmond striker Matt Delicate had cost Harrisburg their season and a berth into the USL-2 championship game.
“I felt that the past season in Harrisburg was missing one thing, and that was a championship,” Chencinski stated. “Losing in the semis to Richmond in the 120th minute, 1-0, still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. But that’s the game; someone needs to lose.”
This past season was the first in USL-2 for Chencinski after being named the PDL Eastern Conference Goalkeeper of the Year the previous year with the Newark Ironbound Express, but it did not come without its trials and tribulations.
“I felt that I really pushed myself to being the best I can be,” he commented. “It was an up-and-down season, from not being cleared internationally in the beginning to losing that last game. I came to training and worked hard every day, always trying to improve.”
As with any sports team that reaches the verge of a championship appearance, Chencinski reflected upon a very important aspect of the 2009 City Islanders.
“I felt that I created a really special bond with the guys on the team,” he remarked. “Not only did we connect on the field, but we did so off the field as well. Some of the guys, I know that I will always keep in touch with them, and I look forward to playing with them again in the future.”
After getting his degree and completing a successful college career at Farleigh Dickinson University in northern New Jersey, Chencinski signed with Toronto FC of Major League Soccer. Therefore, he knows that he has the ability to make it at a very high level within the game of soccer in this country. With the USL-2 season now completed, the ever-determined netminder keeps his focus on the future. USL-1 has made some intriguing expansion moves over the past year, further increasing the opportunities for a skillful goalkeeper like himself.
If nothing else, one thing is for sure with Chencinski. We can definitely expect to see this great athlete making noise between the pipes and helping a lucky team win games for many years to come.
