The Express hope to fill a few roster spots at their final open tryout

Tryouts Will Be Held on Sunday, October 18th

East Orange, N.J. (Wednesday, September 16, 2009) – The Jersey Express of the American Basketball Association announced today that they will be holding their final open tryouts for the 2009-10 ABA season on Sunday, October 18th. Through their partnership with the Newark Urban Coordinating Council and Network Youth Basketball of Newark, the tryouts will be taking place from 12-4:00 p.m. at the Westside Park Gym in Newark with the Express expecting to sign players for their 2009-10 roster.

“We've signed some extremely good talent from the prior two summer tryouts, talent that we feel could compete on the international or NBA level,” Express President Marsha Blount stated. “With vet camp beginning the week after the October 18th tryout, we're looking to fill the final 7-10 spots for camp. We'll go to camp with 20 players competing to make the active roster, and those that have not been signed yet have been invited to vet camp to compete for the final spots.”

Blount and the Express have very high expectations for the upcoming season, which will be their fifth year on the hardwood.

“This is the season that we expect to compete for the championship,” she said. “Opportunity is knocking. How will you answer?”

Pre-registration for tryouts is available through the Jersey Express website at, and the cost for early registration is $75. The fee on the day of tryouts will be $100, with only cash being accepted that day. Players interested in trying out should wear basketball attire and be prepared to do a number of drills that will focus on both skill and overall knowledge of the game. As more information is made available regarding tryouts, it will be posted to the Express website. The Jersey Express is a member of the American Basketball Association and is currently preparing for their fifth season in the ABA. Quaasim Austin is the head coach of the Express with Cassandra Smith serving as his assistant coach, and the team will play their home schedule this year at East Orange Campus High School. The Express made the playoffs in each of their past two seasons and reached the ABA Elite Eight last year in Nashville, Tennessee.
