2009 WPS Champions Maintain Focus on Community Outreach
Somerset, N.J. (Friday, October 2, 2009) – The defending WPS champion Sky Blue FC is headed into the community this weekend, making stops at three locations throughout the region it represents. The organization will get things started by joining the Westfield Soccer Association for their 1st Annual Special Olympics of New Jersey Soccer Festival on Saturday, with weekend destinations at the Old Bridge Girls Soccer Club Meet and Greet and the Lainie’s Angels Kicks for Kids in Metuchen also on the agenda.
“A large part of our mission at Sky Blue FC is to provide positive outreach into our community,” General Manager Gerry Marrone commented. “We have strong female role models within our organization, and it is our pleasure to showcase their strength and positive influence throughout the region.”
The weekend gets started from 9:00 a.m. to noon at Kehler Stadium in Westfield when Sky Blue FC links up with the Westfield Soccer Association and the Special Olympics of New Jersey. In what is planned to become an annual event, the festival will have many activities conducted throughout the day with the highlight being a pair of league matches between clubs from the Special Olympics of New Jersey Soccer League. On hand for the cause will be the Sky Blue Soccer School, the youth training affiliate of the professional team, and additional staff members of Sky Blue FC.
Next up for the organization is the Old Bridge Girls Soccer Club Meet and Greet on Saturday, which will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Higgins Field in Old Bridge. Sky Blue FC defender and English international Anita Asante and the Sky Blue Soccer School will be in attendance for the event, and the team will also be bringing the official WPS Championship Trophy with them. Sky Blue FC will then close out the weekend on Sunday at the Lainie’s Angels Kicks for Kids in Metuchen from noon until 2:00 p.m. This event will take place at St. Joseph High School, and there will be a charity walk and soccer marathon being conducted to raise money for children that suffer from cancer and blood disorders. Sky Blue FC will again bring the WPS Championship Trophy for the function with Mexican National Team goalkeeper Sophia Perez there to sign autographs.
The public is invited to all of the above events to meet members of Sky Blue FC and the Sky Blue Soccer School.
