WR Tim Brown is among the Scarlet Knights who are mourning the death of UConn DB Jasper Howard
Fallen Husky Cornerback Jasper Howard to be Commemorated
Piscataway, N.J. (Thursday, October 29, 2009) – Rutgers University (5-2) is seeking its first Big East win of the season this Saturday when they take on UConn (4-3) in a noon match-up at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut. Meeting for the 29th time in their series history, the Scarlet Knights look to continue improvement on a rushing attack that saw tailback Joe Martinek produce a pair of scores via the ground last week in a 27-10 win over Army.
"I think Tom (Savage) has done a great job with the passing game, so if we can keep building on our running game, it will help our passing game out," Martinek said about the offense. "With the line we have, we set goals running the ball. We try to establish the running game, and we want to run the ball when we want to during the game.”
UConn is making its first home appearance since the tragic murder of cornerback Jasper Howard, and the Huskies have a special tribute planned to honor their fallen teammate. Prior to kickoff, there will be a moment of silence as well as a video tribute to Howard. All fans in attendance will also receive a card with the no. 6 on it, and the first 15,000 fans that enter the game will receive wristbands that read Jazz, Live 365.
"It's a little different just because last week was all really new," UConn defensive tackle Kendall Reyes commented about dealing with the emotions from the loss. "We're going to always remember Jazz, but it might be a little bit easier this week than last week."
All Scarlet Knight players will also be wearing a no. 6 decal in commemoration of Howard.
“A lot of our guys knew Jazz, and I did, and it’s just a tragic event,” Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano stated. “We’re going to have something on our helmets to recognize him. I talked to our team about it. They want to do something; I want to do something.”
The tribute by Rutgers is one that closely touches senior wideout Tim Brown, who grew up with Howard.
“It means a lot to me,” Brown said. “I lost a very important friend.”
This match-up is the Big East Game of the Week and will air live on the Big East Network.
