DMX will no longer make his MMA debut in December.
Coolio Steps Up in Place of Yonkers Lyricist
Birmingham, Ala. (Saturday, November 28, 2009) – Plans of a Mixed Martial Arts fight featuring rapper DMX have been squashed amid reports that the Yonkers native backed out of the fight when promoters refused to fix it in his favor. With X pulling out of the bout against Eric Martinez, fellow rap veteran Coolio has stepped up in his place.
"I'm not a good loser, so I don't plan on losing. It will be a lot of fun, and I am looking forward to seeing my fans out," Coolio said via a statement. "I'm scheduled to perform on December 11th, the night of the weigh-in, and I'll rock the mic the same night after I beat up Martinez."
DMX officially cited safety concerns as his reason for jumping out of the Martinez fight, but the promoters for the bout, Thunder Promotions, claimed X refused to take on Martinez when they said the fight would not be fixed. X is reportedly facing a million dollar lawsuit for refusing the fight, and Coolio was quickly chosen as the stand-in by promoters.
"I chose Coolio because he is a great entertainer and a tough guy," Thunder Promtions President Rod Ricciardi said in a statement explaining why Coolio was selected as the replacement. "Not only is he going to fight, but he is going to perform live after the weigh-ins and after the fight. The location of these performances will be announced. This event is going to be the most entertaining MMA event Birmingham has ever seen."
The fight card is scheduled for Saturday, December 12th, at the Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham, Alabama. The main event of the night features the resurrection of toughman power puncher Butterbean in a fight against Tank Abbott.
