Havana Native was First Cuban Player in Major League Soccer History

Philadelphia (Wednesday, December 2, 2009) – The Philadelphia KiXX announced today that former Cuban National Team player Rey Martinez has been signed for the remainder of the 2009-10 Major Indoor Soccer League season. Martinez, who won an MISL championship with the Baltimore Blast in 2008, tallied a two-point goal in his Philadelphia debut on November 21st against the Blast.

"I am pleased to be able to add Rey Martinez to our roster,” KiXX head coach Don D’Ambra said. “He is a veteran player who adds speed, skill and flexibility to our lineup.”

That veteran leadership and versatility is something that immediately drew D’Ambra to the athletic Martinez.

“Rey is a versatile player who can play defender, midfielder or forward, and he plays these positions well,” he continued. “He also has the ability to make big plays because he has good vision of the field and makes good decisions with the ball offensively."

Born in Havana, Cuba, Martinez spent last season with the New Jersey Ironmen and did not miss a single contest. Despite playing out of the back, he finished fifth on the high-scoring Ironmen with 31 points on 13 goals and four assists. Before heading to the Garden State, he spent two seasons in Baltimore after beginning his indoor career with the St. Louis Steamers.

The defensive-minded Martinez originally began his professional career with Ciudad la Habana in his native Cuba and also became a fixture with the Cuban National Team, appearing in 17 matches. On the international scene, he logged minutes in the Gold Cup, Copa Caribe and Pan American Games while netting a pair of goals for Cuba.

The next stop in his professional career was with the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer in 2004, becoming the first Cuban player to ever play in MLS. Prior to the 2005 season, he signed with the Rochester Rhinos of USL-1 and remained with the outdoor club for three years before spending 2008 with the Carolina Railhawks and this past season with the Real Maryland Monarchs of USL-2.

The next action on the turf for Martinez and the KiXX is a road contest on Friday against the Rockford Rampage, and that can game be watched live online by clicking here. The team will play its historic first game at the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University on Saturday, January 9th, hosting the Rockford Rampage at 7:00 p.m. Season and group ticket packages for the KiXX are available now by calling 1-888-888-KiXX.
