Sky Blue FC Prepares for WPS Draft

Draft Starts at 10:00 a.m. this Friday; Sky Blue FC Has 6th Overall Selection

Philadelphia (Thursday, January 14, 2010) – The 2010 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) College Draft will kick off on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia, with defending WPS Champions Sky Blue FC first selecting sixth overall in the first round. The WPS Draft will consist of seven rounds, with the Philadelphia Independence and Atlanta Beat expansion franchises receiving an extra selection in the opening round. Sky Blue FC will make a total of seven picks in the one-day draft.

“Although we are fortunate to have most of our championship team of players returning, we are nonetheless excited to hopefully add even more star-power to our roster,” Sky Blue FC General Manager Gerry Marrone said of the WPS Draft. “The coaching staff has done extensive pre-draft homework, and we are ready for the drama to come!”

Each team will have three minutes to announce its selections in the first two rounds, and five minutes will be given in the last five rounds. Each member team is also allowed to request a timeout per round in order to negotiate a trade.

Fans and media are strongly encouraged to ask questions during the WPS Draft on both of the social media outlets for Sky Blue FC head coach Pauliina Miettinen, assistant coach Anne Parnila, goalkeeper coach Rick Stainton and Marrone, all of whom will be working together to make the draft selections. Answers will then be given via the respective social networking website that the questions were given.

Second Round – No Picks (Traded to Saint Louis Athletica)
Third Round – 6th (26th Overall) 9th (29th Overall – Acquired via trade with Saint Louis Athletica)
Fourth Round – 6th (35th Overall)
Fifth Round – 6th (44th Overall)
Sixth Round – 6th (53rd Overall)
Seventh Round – 6th (62nd Overall)
