KiXX Midfielder Served as Assistant Coach at Villanova this Past Fall
Philadelphia (Thursday, February 18, 2010) – Philadelphia University Athletic Director Tom Shirley announced this week that KiXX midfielder Ptah Myers has been hired as the head coach of its men’s soccer program. Myers takes over the reins of the program after spending this past fall as an assistant coach at Villanova University.
“I have spent a lot of time traveling throughout my career while playing indoor and outdoor soccer, and I was really looking to settle down in one location,” Myers said of his desire to coach. “I really like Philadelphia, and I am very excited that this opportunity presented itself to me.”
Myers, who will continue to suit up for the KiXX, made his Major Indoor Soccer League debut for Philadelphia in 2004 after a standout career at the University of Massachusetts. For his indoor career, he has registered 147 points on 64 goals and 31 helpers. Myers, who is a member of the U.S. National Futsal Team, has also blocked 121 shots and recently played in his 150th career game.
“Having played at the professional level brings with it a certain amount of credibility, and that will help in being able to get players to buy into what I’m saying,” he said of the correlation between being a coach and professional player. “The fact that I’m not that far removed from college will also be something that will enable me to identify with the players as well.”
Myers has not only played professionally indoors with the KiXX, but the Columbus, Ohio, native has also played professional outdoor soccer with the Virginia Beach Mariners when the team played in USL-1.
“I’m proud to announce the hiring of current Philadelphia KiXX player Ptah Myers as our men’s soccer head coach,” Tom Shirley said of his new soccer coach this week. “With his professional playing background and experience in the Big East and Atlantic 10, we feel he’s ready to take our team to the next level.”
Myers and the KiXX return to the turf this Saturday when the team hosts La Raza de Monterrey at 7:05 p.m. The first 500 fans (18 and older) to come through the gates on Saturday will also be treated to a free KiXX Dance Team calendar. Immediately following the match, the players' game worn jerseys will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Children's Miracle Network at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
