Player/coach Don D'Ambra sparked a late KiXX run.
Baltimore Holds off Late Philadelphia Rally, 12-8
Baltimore, Md. (Friday, March 5, 2010) – The Philadelphia KiXX (5-9) went on a late run in the fourth quarter tonight at 1st Mariner Arena, but the Baltimore Blast (9-7) were able to hold off the rally to win by a count of 12-8. With the win, Baltimore takes the season series from the KiXX and gains a three-game cushion in the standings for the final playoff seed.
These two clubs wasted little time in the match, and an early Adrian Bumbut to Lucio Gonzaga goal at 1:33 made it 2-0 in favor of the host Blast. Philadelphia then evened it on a Pat Morris knock at 2:55 with midfielder Gary Brooks, who returned to the KiXX roster this week after starting the season with the Rockford Rampage, recording the assist. At 9:22 of the opening frame, Baltimore midfielder Robbie Aristodemo set up Denison Cabral on a two-point tally, and Cabral followed up with two more quick goals to get the hat trick in 2:29 of play. That 8-2 Blast lead then held as the first period came to a close.
Bumbut picked up another assist 32 seconds into the second stanza on a Guiliano Celenza goal to give Baltimore a 10-2 advantage, but the knock marked the only points of the quarter after both clubs played solid defense the rest of the frame.
After the entire third quarter had almost elapsed, Philadelphia player/coach Don D’Ambra broke up the defensive battle by finishing a Will Kletzien feed, and the KiXX trailed Baltimore heading into the final period, 10-4.
Philadelphia started heating up in the fourth stanza, first with MISL points leader Adauto Neto striking a volley into the upper 90 at 1:43 to make the score 10-6. After Sandre Naumoski one-touched a Kevin Coleman ball at 3:13 to bring the KiXX within two points, the Blast stopped the Philadelphia run at 3:50 on a notch by forward Max Ferdinand to hang a 12-8 count. With 3:17 remaining in the contest, D’Ambra opted for Morris as the sixth attacker, but Baltimore was able to hang on for the win.
The KiXX will return home this Sunday to host Boy Scout and Girl Scout Day. Tickets for that match are available now by calling 1-888-888-KiXX or by visiting www.ComcastTix.com.
