Sky Blue FC Announces Partnership with FC Copa Academy

FC Copa to Operate Official Sky Blue FC Reserve Team

Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced today a partnership with FC Copa Academy, a prominent soccer development academy that is based in New Jersey. As part of the affiliation, FC Copa will manage the official Sky Blue FC Reserve Team in a co-branded agreement, which will play a season concurrently with the full professional side.

“Partnering with FC Copa makes perfect sense for our organization from both a soccer and a business perspective,” said Tony Novo, Sky Blue FC President & General Manager. “FC Copa has consistently developed talented players through their academy program, and we know that they will now continue that tradition with our reserve team. When we created our club partnership program, this is exactly the kind of affiliation that we were looking to develop as we strengthen our relationships with soccer clubs throughout New Jersey and the entire Tri-State area.”

Founded in 2005 by Roberto Aguas, FC Copa has since emerged into an elite development academy that has produced high level youth, college and professional players.

"We are honored to be selected as a partner of the only professional women's team in the state in such a tangible and meaningful way," stated Roberto Aguas, Executive Director of Coaching and Founder of FC Copa. "The development of players in our academy who currently have a successful collegiate placement path now have a visible pathway to the professional ranks. By selecting FC Copa to manage and operate the Sky Blue FC Professional Reserve, U23 and U20 teams, we feel that it will allow both organizations to offer a unique and special opportunity for all top female players to be part of a new generation of professional prospects."

With the partnership, members of the Sky Blue FC Reserve, U23 and U20 teams will have a direct lineage from the NWSL side, and its players will receive monitoring from the Sky Blue FC coaching staff. Additionally, select players will have an opportunity to periodically train with the professional club.

“Our partnership with FC Copa is a great step in the development of young players,” confirmed Jim Gabarra, Sky Blue FC Technical Director & Head Coach. “This relationship offers a more tangible way to the professional team through the reserve team, as well as with the U20s and U23s within the club itself. We are really looking forward to working closer with these younger players and assisting in their development in the game.”
