Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced today that it has come to terms with midfielder/forwards Lo’eau LaBonta and Kim DeCesare. LaBonta will become available to Sky Blue FC upon registration approval, while DeCesare will join the club upon ITC receipt.
“Lo’eau LaBonta has been a good fit for us,” said Jim Gabarra, Technical Director & Head Coach. “She arrived late into camp, but she immediately fit in well with the way we play and also with our other players. She has looked dangerous at times, and we expect her to challenge for starting minutes.”
With its final selection (No. 34 overall) of the 2015 NWSL College Draft, Sky Blue FC turned in the name of LaBonta after a standout career at Stanford University. The California native was a NSCAA All-America and Top Drawer Soccer Best XI Second Team honoree following her senior season in the fall, recording 31 points on 13 goals and five assists. For her four-year career, LaBonta tallied 51 points on 22 goals and seven assists while accumulating 178 total shots. Additionally, she is currently a member of the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team alongside fellow Sky Blue FC teammates Sarah Killion and Kristin Grubka.
“Kim DeCesare is someone who we have been watching for quite some time,” Gabarra remarked. “She is a versatile and athletic player who provides coverage and depth, not only up front but also in the defensive midfield.”
A native of Massapequa Park, New York, DeCesare comes to Sky Blue FC after spending the preseason with defending NWSL Champion FC Kansas City. 2015 will mark the second season in the league for DeCesare, who played with the Boston Breakers after being selected by them in the 2014 College Draft. The New York native recently finished a season with Eskilstuna United DFF of the Damallsvenskan, which is the top women’s league in Sweden. DeCesare played collegiately for Duke University, where she ranks sixth all-time with 29 career goals, ninth with 73 points and ninth with nine game-winning goals, while also registering 15 career assists.
