Two huge title fights headline a loaded UFC 111.
MMA Super Card Heads to Newark this Saturday
Newark, N.J. (Tuesday, March 23, 2010) – The excitement continues to build around Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) coming to town this Saturday. The state-of-the-art Prudential Center will be home to UFC 111, a loaded Mixed Martial Arts card that is headlined by a title defense of Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre (19-2-0) against Dan Hardy (23-6-0).
“We are very excited to have this card,” said Will Carafello, Marketing Manager at Prudential Center. “This event will no doubt be one of the highest grossing events in the building history. At Prudential Center, we continue to attract and host world-class events, and this is the kind of event we will continue to bring our fans.”
In addition to the St. Pierre-Hardy fight, UFC 111 will also feature a co-main event for the Interim Heavyweight Championship between undefeated Shane Carwin (11-0-0) and Frank Mir (13-4-0). Mir, who handed the recently sidelined champion Brock Lesnar his only loss in the Octagon, suffered the only defeat in his the last five fights in a rematch against a better-groomed Lesnar at UFC 100. The winner of Carwin-Mir is expected to fight Lesnar when he returns from a recent battle with an intestinal issue.
“I can’t say enough about a fight that has undefeated powerhouse wrestler Shane Carwin taking on former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir for the interim belt,” UFC President Dana White said of the Carwin-Mir battle. “This fight pits Carwin’s one punch KO power versus Mir’s fight-ending submission game. Both of these (main event) matches are can’t miss fights in terms of action.”
While this action-packed card is the first stop at Prudential Center by the UFC, it will be the second time that the facility has hosted an MMA card. The first national telecast of the defunct Elite XC took place at Prudential Center in 2008, a card that featured current Strikeforce fighter Gina Carano and street fighter Kimbo Slice, who has since worked his way into UFC after going through The Ultimate Fighter. Prudential Center has also become the preferred home of Polish heavyweight boxer Tomasz Adamek, who recently defended his IBF International Heavyweight title against Jason Estrada in his fourth fight in Newark this past February.
