New Basketball League
Set to Debut this December

Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League Plans Winter Premiere

Groton, N.Y. (Thursday, April 8, 2010) – A new basketball league hopes to launch this December, and it has publicly stated a lofty goal to directly compete with NBA D-League. The Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League (ACPBL) recently announced intentions to place teams along the entire East Coast, and the league has hired former Elmira Bulldogs General Manager James Schutz as its inaugural Commissioner.

"It will certainly be sad to leave behind the Elmira Bulldogs with all of the success we have had," Schutz commented. "However, it is bitter sweet as now I have been provided with the opportunity to provide and support my family while still being involved in the one thing I have always loved most, the game of basketball."

As a result of accepting his new post as ACPBL Commissioner, Schutz stepped down as General Manager of the Elmira Bulldogs. The Bulldogs played this past season in the Eastern Basketball Alliance (EBA) and reached the league’s postseason, which are slated to tip off later this month. Before joining the EBA, the Bulldogs competed in the now-defunct National Professional Basketball League (NPBL).

The ACPBL noted in a recent press release that the league has heard from nine different franchises that have expressed interest in participating in its inaugural season. Schutz feels that up to 30 teams will contact him regarding acceptance into the ACPBL, and the number will be cut down to 10 franchises by the time the league gets started in December.

"When it comes to ACPBL franchises, we want quality, not quantity,” he remarked.

In one of his first moves as Commissioner, Schutz has hired New York native Sean Thomas as the league’s Director of Basketball Operations. Thomas spent three years with the Elmira Bulldogs working alongside Schutz, and he began his professional basketball career with the team when it played its debut season out of Corning, New York.

“Sean Thomas is everything a professional sports league needs to have in its Director of Operations,” Schutz said of Thomas. “He is young, bright and well educated in the sports management field.”

The ACPBL will begin announcing its inaugural roster of teams in the upcoming months, and fans interested in additional information about the league can visit
