Rampone Also Talks Recovery and Her Imminent Return to the Field

Somerset, N.J. (Thursday, April 22, 2010) – After giving birth to her second daughter, Reece, this past March, Sky Blue FC defender Christie Rampone has been working hard to get herself back on the field for the team. But before she is able to return to the soccer pitch for the defending Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) Champions, the Point Pleasant native will hit the baseball diamond for the Lakewood BlueClaws to throw out the first pitch on Friday night.

“For me the first pitch will take a lot of focus because I can’t throw,” Rampone joked today. “Hopefully, I’ll get the baseball in hand and deliver it over the plate. I can’t disappoint my husband, Chris, because he used to be a pitcher.”

Sky Blue FC formally established a partnership with the BlueClaws, Class-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, this past offseason. The BlueClaws play in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League, and the team plays its home games at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood Township. Similar to Sky Blue FC, the BlueClaws are defending a league championship this year after winning the South Atlantic League crown in 2009.

“This is a great partnership that we have with the BlueClaws,” Rampone said of the relationship. “They have a great fan base and create a fun atmosphere for their fans. Through this partnership, we are able to open up the exposure of soccer to a wider base of fans, and we hope to create new fans for our team and the game.”

Since leading Sky Blue FC to the inaugural WPS Championship last season as its player/captain, Rampone has become a mother for the second time (she and Chris have another daughter, Rylie) and has looked forward to getting back on the field. The Monmouth University graduate has already begun to work herself back into shape, and she anticipates her professional return will come in the near future.

“My training has been going well,” she confirmed. “I’m going through the first two weeks of soreness, and it feels good to go from being on bed rest to now just being sore. I’m definitely heading in the right direction. In a few weeks, I’ll hopefully be out there training with the girls on the field.”

Rampone jokingly admitted that one area wasn’t quite as cooperative as her first recovery from maternity leave.

“The weight’s not coming off as easily as it used to, but I’m feeling good,” she laughed. “In a few weeks, I’ll be ready. I’m just excited and anxious to get back out there on the field with my teammates.”

While Rampone continues to get herself back into game shape, her teammates will play a second consecutive road match this Sunday when Sky Blue FC travels to Chicago for a rematch of an opening day win over the Red Stars, 1-0.

May 1st marks the return of the team to Yurcak Field when it will host FC Gold Pride of the Bay Area. On a limited basis, fans can purchase an exclusive ticket package to have their photo taken with Brazilian playmakers Marta and Rosana.
