While the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) offseason occurs, a handful of Sky Blue FC players have made the move overseas to continue developing their game in international competition. Throughout the NWSL offseason, we will keep you updated with the latest news and developments with our players.
The biggest news for Sky Blue FC on the international front was very unfortunate, as the team learned that forward Sam Kerr is expected to miss at least three months following a ligament rupture to her left foot. The incident was a non-contact injury that occurred in the 20th minute of an Australia W-League match on Saturday after the Perth Glory striker chased down an attempted clearance by Brisbane Roar goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer.
The timeline for recovery shows that the Australian international is scheduled to be ready for Olympic qualifiers and the start of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) preseason in March.
In that same contest, Kerr’s Sky Blue FC and Perth teammates Caitlin Foord and Nikki Stanton each played the full 90 minutes of an eventual 2-0 victory for their side. The win increased Perth’s record to 2-2-1 (7 points), good enough to elevate the club into a three-way knot for second place on the W-League table.
Sky Blue FC midfielder Sarah Killion and Adelaide United (2-1-1, 7 points) suffered their first loss of the W-League season on Saturday, falling to top-ranked Melbourne City FC (5-0-0, 15 points) by a tally of 2-0. In the match, Killion played the full 90 minutes for her club.
Forward Nadia Nadim and Danish side Fortuna Hjørring fell to Brescia Calcio Femminile by a count of 1-0 last Wednesday in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Round of 16. The two clubs will meet again tomorrow for a second leg encounter. That match can be watched live online, with kickoff slated for 1:00 PM ET.
