Cuban brings even more credibility to the United Football League.
Dallas Mavericks Owner Takes Stake in Second Year League
Dallas, Texas (Monday, April 26, 2010) – The United Football League (UFL) continues to make well calculated moves, announcing at its annual meetings last Friday that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has joined to be a co-owner of the second year league. Cuban had initially shown interest in owning an UFL franchise but ultimately decided to claim a stake at the league level.
"I didn't want to take on the responsibility of a franchise," Cuban said this past Friday in an interview with ESPN’s Jeff Caplan.
Cuban had an invested interest in the UFL before making this move, as the ultra-successful business entrepreneur aired games in 2009 on his television network, HDNet. Along with Versus, HDNet served as an official television partner of the UFL during its inaugural year of play, and the league is expected to bring in a third broadcast partner for 2010.
Having seen a bulk of the UFL games last season, Cuban confirmed that the on-field product of the league is one of its main selling points.
"It's good football," he stated. "There are guys, obviously, that have NFL experience, guys who have been all-stars in the NFL, guys who've gone from the UFL to the NFL. It was kind of still in beta last year, it will probably get a higher beta release this year, and I think next year is when it really starts to kick in."
The UFL has shown considerable growth since its inception and has already expanded into the Omaha market this offseason, bringing the 2010 roster to five clubs. It is believed one more franchise will join to play this fall, with Cuban’s home state of Texas being the likely destination. San Antonio is where many believe the team will be placed.
“This league has established a platform for longevity, has a very bright future, and we will be around for a long time,” UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue said of the UFL. “We are delighted that HDNet Chairman Mark Cuban has strengthened his interest in the UFL beyond his broadcasting commitment by becoming an owner in the league.”
The 2010 UFL season is slated to kick off on September 17 and play its championship game during Thanksgiving Weekend.
