St. Louis (Saturday, May 15, 2010) – Sky Blue FC (3-2-0, 9 points) looks to maintain its grip on second place in the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) Standings this Sunday, with the team traveling for an afternoon road pairing with Saint Louis Athletica (2-1-2, 8 points). Kickoff for the match is slated for 4:00 p.m., and a win in this game would give Sky Blue FC its third straight road victory.

“Everybody is excited about this match,” Sky Blue FC head coach Pauliina Miettinen said. “We are gaining confidence with each game we play, and this match will be a great test for us.”

Sky Blue FC has been faced with many early season obstacles this year, with key injuries sidelining a handful of impact players. The team has still maintained an upbeat attitude and fought through those hardships, all the while picking up the points to maintain its position in the upper echelon of the WPS Standings. Many of the players who have been recently sidelined are also close to returning to the pitch for Sky Blue FC as well.

“In the end, the only thing that matters is getting the points,” Miettinen continued. “We have been missing some key players, but we have also had many young players step up and contribute in their absence. This team shows great character in the way it approaches each game and training session, and our players have a true fighting spirit within them.”

Including the match tomorrow afternoon, three of Sky Blue FC’s last four games have been on the road, and the team knows acquiring a winning rhythm on the road is essential for a successful season.

“It’s a matter of consistency for us,” midfielder Yael Averbuch stated. “We try to go into every game with the same attitude, whether it’s home or away. We really try to go after every team and win every game. Hopefully, we’ll do that again this weekend.”
