Long Island Sound, Boston Storm Score Wins at UWLX Opening Weekend

The Boston Storm exploded for 16 points in the UWLX nightcap.

Professional women’s lacrosse officially became a reality on Saturday, with the 2016 season kickoff of the United Women’s Lacrosse League (UWLX) at Goodman Stadium on the campus of Lehigh University.

Baltimore Ride vs. Long Island Sound

In the inaugural UWLX match, the Baltimore Ride and Long Island Sound faced off, with both clubs trading goals for the entirety of a highly competitive match-up. The Baltimore attack was credited with the historical first goal in UWLX history, as Beth Glaros finished a feed from Courtney Swan just under four minutes into the contest. McKinley Curro quickly responded for Long Island about a minute later to level the count, registering the first Sound goal in club history.

Possessing up-tempo game characteristics such as a 90-second shot clock and two-point tallies, the UWLX saw Curro follow up her opening score with the first two-point goal in league history.

Baltimore took a tight 7-6 advantage into the intermission, and both teams continue to swap goals in the second half of this hotly contested match. The action literally came down to the final minute, with the Sound scoring on a late tally from Lindsay Scott to make it 13-12 with 42 seconds remaining on the clock. The Ride went on the immediate attack in search of the equalizer, which nearly came on a final save by Long Island goalie Devon Willis as the buzzer sounded to preserve the win for Long Island.

Lindsay Scott led the way for the Sound with four goals, including the game-winner, while McKinley Curro hung three points on two scores.

Beth Glaros was the top scorer for Baltimore, registering a game-high four notches. Dana Dobbie put three balls into the net, while Brooke Griffin and Katie Schwarzmann each had two goals.

Philadelphia Force vs. Boston Storm

In the second match nightcap, the Philadelphia Force and Boston Storm met in UWLX action. The Force made their home fans happy early in this outing, with Rebecca Lynch etching her name into the Philadelphia history books by finishing a Hilary Bowen feed. Boston then leveled the count shortly thereafter when a Danielle Etrasco to Kailah Kempney connection gave them their first score in club history.

After trading goals, Katie Webster scored an unassisted tally to put the Force up, 6-5, only to see the Storm score four consecutive goals to finish off the half with a 9-6 advantage.

Boston continued their offensive burst into the second half of play, outscoring Philadelphia 7-2 to hang the final score line of 16-8. The Storm saw huge offensive contributions from Danielle Spencer (5 pts.) and Kailah Kempney, who both recorded four goals on the evening. Danielle Etrasco was also a major player in the outcome, netting three scores and setting up another pair.

The Force got their largest offensive production from Kara Mupo (3 pts.) and Hilary Bowen, who each were responsible for two goals.
