Long Island Sound Tops Philadelphia Force to Remain Unbeaten

Sound Sees Hat Tricks from Alyssa Leonard and Shannon Gilroy in the Win

The inaugural season of the United Women’s Lacrosse League (UWLX) resumed Saturday at Richard F. Garber Field in Amherst, Mass., with the Long Island Sound (2-0) defeating the Philadelphia Force (0-2), 14-8. The Storm was paced by a pair of hat tricks on offense, as Alyssa Leonard and Shannon Gilroy each had three goals. The Force also saw a hat trick come off the stick of Alyssa Murray in the loss.

Long Island raced out to a rapid start in this match-up, registering the first three goals of the afternoon. The Sound attack spread the wealth on those three tallies, with Kelly McPartland, Halle Majorana and McKinley Curro all finishing scoring attempts.

After the early Long Island surge, Philadelphia goalie Bridget Bianco really settled in and made some key saves, and the Force soon got on the board when Murray rocketed a hard shot into the back of the net. Curro then quickly responded for the Sound to extend it back to a three-notch deficit, 4-1.

After the two clubs swapped another pair of goals, the Sound rallied all the way to a 7-2 advantage, but the Force climbed within three points after Barbara Sullivan and Murray registered back-to-back tallies before halftime to make it 7-4.

Long Island opened the second half in similar fashion to how it got the game started, scoring four consecutive goals to grab an 11-4 edge. Katrina Dowd and Leonard struck first, with Gilroy then registering a pair to complete a hat trick on the day.

Not to be outdone, the Force then went on a three-tally run to get it to an 11-7 score line, as Kara Mupo, Sullivan and Rebecca Lynch were all able to find the back of the net. However, that was as close as Philadelphia would be able to make it, as the Sound went on another hot streak that put up a 14-7 tally. Amid the run was another pair from Leonard, which gave her a hat trick in the contest, as well as the second score of the afternoon from Hillary Fratzke.

The final notch of this game came shortly after that second half run from Long Island, as Murray scored the third goal of a hat trick, hanging the final 14-8 result in favor of the Sound.
