Sound Opens UWLX Campaign with Four Consecutive Victories
The United Women’s Lacrosse League (UWLX) returned to action on Friday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex on the campus of Lehigh University, with the Long Island Sound (4-0) holding off a late run by the host Philadelphia Force (0-4) to emerge victorious, 11-9. Leading the Long Island attack was Alyssa Leonard (three goals, two assists) and Katrina Dowd (two goals, three assist) with five points, while Philadelphia was paced by a three-tally performance by Michelle Tumulo.
The Sound started the scoring in this contest with a pair of goals from Dowd and Lindsay Scott, which were both assisted by Leonard, only to see the Force respond with back-to-back notches off the sticks of Kaylin Morissette and Tumolo.
Long Island then showed once again what has kept them perfect on the young UWLX season, hitting a hot streak to finish off the opening half. On that scoring run, they put away the next four consecutive goals and six of the final seven before intermission. Leading the way was Leonard, who recorded a hat trick before the whistle at halftime with the count standing at 8-3 in favor of the Sound.
The second half got underway with an exchange of tallies until the score stood at 10-5 with about five minutes remaining, only to see Philadelphia catch fire to the final whistle. Kara Mupo and Murray first scored for the hosts, but Shannon Gilroy retaliated for the Sound to hang an 11-7 score line. Tumolo then finished off a pair to earn a hat trick on the night, but the Force would get no closer than that 11-9 tally.
Both of these teams will return to action again tomorrow at the Ulrich Sports Complex. First up, the Philadelphia Force will host the Boston Storm at 6:00 p.m., followed up by the Long Island Sound and Baltimore Ride taking the field at 8:00 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets to the doubleheader for the low price of $15.
