Rookie Campaign Comes to a Close Due to Right Lateral Meniscus Tear

Sky Blue FC (6-5-4, 22 points) of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) was dealt some unfortunate news on Wednesday, announcing that forward Catherine Zimmerman’s rookie season has come to a close after undergoing surgery to repair a right lateral meniscus tear. The New Jersey native sustained the injury in the first half of a match with the Washington Spirit on July 31st.

“It is very unfortunate for Catherine to have picked up this injury,” said Christy Holly, Sky Blue FC head coach. “She has really cemented herself into the team and has given us some solid performances. We will be fully supportive of her during her recovery period, and we look forward to getting her back on the field next season.”

Zimmerman was officially signed by Sky Blue FC on July 1st, starting four times over five appearances and accumulating 257 total minutes. The Madison, N.J., resident began the 2016 NWSL season on the roster for the Western New York Flash before opting to finish up her education at Providence College. Upon graduation, she returned home to New Jersey and began training with Sky Blue FC as a reserve player, eventually signing a professional contract.

While playing at Providence, Zimmerman scored at least seven goals each season with the Friars, accumulating a career total of 32 goals and 12 assists. Beginning with her freshman year, she led Providence in points for four consecutive seasons, including a career high 27 points on 11 goals and five assists during her junior campaign. After being named to the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team as a freshman, she followed that up with All-BIG EAST Second Team honors as a sophomore and back-to-back All-BIG EAST First Team accolades during her final two years in Rhode Island.

Sky Blue FC returns to action following a league-wide Olympic break on Saturday, August 27th, welcoming the Chicago Red Stars to Yurcak Field at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for that match are available now, and all fans who eat at Quaker Steak & Lube in Edison before the game will receive free parking for the match.
