Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) will see a pair of its players participating in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Olympic Games, with defender Kelley O’Hara representing the United States of America and forward Sam Kerr suiting up for Australia. Both the USA and Australia advanced to the quarterfinals following completion of Olympic Group Play earlier this week.
O’Hara and the U.S. Olympic Team won Group G and are now set for a noon E.T. meeting with Sweden on Friday. The American side finished atop its group following wins over New Zealand (2-0) and France (1-0) before concluding the opening round competition with a 2-2 draw against Colombia. Sweden finished third in Group E with a 1-0 win over South Africa, 5-1 defeat to Brazil and scoreless draw with China.
Kerr and the Australia Women’s National Team finished third in a highly-competitive Group F and are now set for a 9:00 p.m. ET meeting with host nation Brazil on Friday night. In the opening round of play, the Matildas fell to group winner Canada, 2-0, before playing Germany to a 2-2 draw and defeating Zimbabwe, 6-1. In the draw with Germany, Kerr was responsible for an electric goal in the 6th minute that opened the scoring in that match. Brazil was the winner of Group E in the preliminary round of the Olympics, following a 3-0 defeat of China, 5-1 win over Sweden and a scoreless draw with South Africa.
Sky Blue FC returns to action following a league-wide Olympic break on Saturday, August 27th, welcoming the Chicago Red Stars to Yurcak Field at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for that match are available now, and all fans who eat at Quaker Steak & Lube in Edison before the game will receive free parking for the match.
