Sky Blue FC Netminder Recorded 31 Saves in the Month of May
Somerset, N.J. (Thursday, June 3, 2010) – Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) announced today that Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Karen Bardsley has been named WPS Player of the Month for the month of May. Bardsley accumulated a 1-1-2 record in May, registering two shutouts and 31 saves in the four matches her team played.
“I feel very fortunate to have this honor bestowed upon me,” Bardsley said of the accolade. “I definitely embrace an award like this, and I'm so happy that our play in the back has been translating to success for us as a team.”
While all of the WPS fans who have Bardsley on their fantasy team are extremely grateful for the numbers she has been putting on the score sheet, the Cal State Fullerton graduate has a much bigger mission for this season.
“My goal has never been to see how many stats I can rack up; that’s not what I’m playing for,” Bardsley remarked. “Every minute I’m on the field, I’m out there playing for my team, and the success of our team is what is most important to me. My teammates always have my back on the field, and I will do everything in my power to make sure I always have theirs.”
Bardsley may not be one to pat herself on the back, but Sky Blue FC head coach Pauliina Miettinen is quick to acknowledge the impact that her play has had on the success of the team so far this season.
“I’m just so happy for Karen, and it’s great to see her get rewarded for all the hard work that she’s done,” Miettinen stated. “(Goalkeeper coach) Rick Stainton has done tremendous work with her, and you can clearly see the special dynamic they share in the way Karen has been playing."
Not that Stainton is accepting any of the recognition for himself.
“It’s absolutely amazing to see Karen get this honor,” he commented. “I’m so proud of her, and this has nothing to do with me. I’m just a facilitator, but she’s the one who goes out and puts forth the effort. I take no credit for what she’s accomplished, and I’m just happy to be part of it. Everything that she’s done on the field is because of the hard work she puts in day in, day out, on the practice field. The games have really just been the fruits of all her labor.”
Next up for Bardsley and Sky Blue FC is a road pairing with the Philadelphia Independence on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. The team will return to New Jersey on Saturday, June 19th, to host Philadelphia, and tickets for that game are available now by calling 1-888-SBFC-TIX.
