Team Faces Sunday Match with Breakers
Somerset, N.J. (Saturday, June 12, 2010) – With the 2010 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) season now a third of a way through the schedule, the battle for the top spots in the WPS Standings is continuing to heat up. This weekend brings another loaded slate of WPS action, with a key match at Harvard Stadium between Sky Blue FC (3-3-2, 11 points) and the Boston Breakers (1-2-4, 7 points) taking place this Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
“This game is all about getting the win,” Sky Blue FC head coach Pauliina Miettinen stated. “We are at a point in the season where every game is becoming increasingly more important, and picking up three points in Boston would be huge for us.”
This is the second meeting between these two teams this season, with the first match ending in a scoreless draw at Yurcak Field two weekends ago. Both teams played very aggressively on the offensive end in that pairing, but solid play by the back line and goalkeeper on both sides kept each a clean slate.
“Our players look at Boston as a rival, so it always adds a little bit more when we play one another,” Miettinen continued. “When you have a rivalry with another team, it naturally affects the mood of the game. When you take that into perspective combined with the importance of this game’s outcome, it will definitely be a very entertaining night of soccer on Sunday.”
After being hit by the “injury bug” early in this season, Sky Blue FC has started to see some of its familiar faces return to the pitch. One of those players who returned to action this past Sunday against the Philadelphia Independence is defender Christie Rampone, who hit the field for the first time since giving birth to her second daughter, Reece, this past March.
“Everyone respects Christie and all of the experience that she has,” Miettinen commented. “You cannot underestimate having her presence and leadership on the field, and we are all very excited to have her back on the active roster.”
After Sunday’s match with the Breakers, Sky Blue FC will return to New Jersey on Saturday, June 19th, to host Philadelphia, and tickets for that game are available now by calling 1-888-SBFC-TIX.
