Heavyweights will Meet in June for Top Contender Spot

UFC President Dana White dropped a bombshell on a media call Tuesday for the upcoming Fight for the Troops card, announcing that heavyweights Brock Lesnar (5-2) and Junior dos Santos (12-1) will serve as coaches on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter. With filming scheduled to start in just under two weeks, White admitted that this season will likely be pretty trying times for himself and the production crew.

“I know it’s going to be a tough season,” he told the media. “I deal with Brock in very short spurts. The guy fights two or three times a year, and it’s always tough. It’s going to be a very interesting six weeks of filming.”

With Lesnar locked in for TUF 13, rumors of his desire to appear at the upcoming WWE Wrestlemania can pretty much be put to rest to now. Word circulated that he may want to transition back to professional wrestling after losing his UFC Heavyweight Title in October, suffering a vicious first round TKO loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121.

“I liked all of the rumors going around that Brock didn’t want to do this anymore, and that Brock wanted to be a WWE wrestler again,” White admitted. “None of that was true. Obviously, I was in communication with Brock and his team, and talking with them the whole time.

“There was no wheeling and dealing about the WWE. I think everybody knows how I feel about that. He’s under contract with me.”

Velasquez is currently shelved due to a rotator cuff injury that he incurred during training, and the Mexican-American fighter will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair it. He is expected to miss six to eight months of competition as a result, meaning number one contender dos Santos would not get his shot at the belt until Velasquez returned. Rather than sit and wait, dos Santos decided he would rather take a match with Lesnar first to truly solidify himself as the top contender for the championship.

“There’s no interim title,” White confirmed about the Lesnar and dos Santos pairing. “Obviously, these two are going to coach, and then they’ll fight. And the winner of that fight will fight Cain Velasquez when he’s healthy.”

White later went on to say that the planned meeting in the Octagon between Lesnar and dos Santos will be in June.
