Newark Native Featured in Main Event of Friday’s TeleFutura Broadcast
Unbeaten lightweight prospect Michael Perez (11-0-1, 5 KOs) is headed back to Puerto Rico this week, fighting in the feature bout of TeleFutura’s Sólo Boxeo Tecate on Friday night at the Coliseo Félix Méndez Acevedo in Lares. The Newark, New Jersey, native will be seeking the 12th win of his professional career as he takes on Marcos Herrera (6-3-1, 2 KO’s) of Colorado.
“It’s a pleasure to be fighting in Lares,” said Perez, whose father was born in the Puerto Rican city. “Everybody has been asking me when I was coming back to Puerto Rico, and Golden Boy decided to promote another card here, so it was a natural fit. I’m really looking forward to putting on another great show for my loyal fans.”
The last time that Perez stepped in the ring was also in Puerto Rico for the Sólo Boxeo Tecate series in December, battling Jose Hernandez (10-4) to a hard fought split decision victory. Collectively, he picked up five total wins in 2010, including a pair of first round knockouts, and he hopes to continue that momentum into 2011. Nicknamed the Artist, Perez first turned professional just over two years ago after a successful amateur career that included a National Golden Gloves Championship in 2008.
In the co-main event on Friday evening, Puerto Rican puncher Jayson Vélez will be opposite Juan Josè Beltrán in eight rounds of featherweight action, while Canadian junior middleweight Mikael Zewski and Bronx native Eddie Gomez will also be on the card. This event is being co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Promociones Miguel Cotto and H2 Entertainment, and the fights will hit the television airwaves on TeleFutura at 11:30 p.m. EST.
