Team Opens Season in Long Island on May 9th
Yiantsos is expected to be a leader on the field for the Wilcats
West Windsor, N.J. (Friday, May 1, 2009) – With their season opener just over a week away, the New Jersey Wildcats announced today a player commitment from Drexel University midfielder Aleka Yiantsos. The all-time career points leader at Drexel, Yiantsos looks to bring veteran leadership to the Wildcats attack this year.
“Aleka has great speed and a good feel for both the forward and midfielder position,” Wildcats head coach Dave Barbour stated. “She comes to us with a good soccer background from playing at Drexel, and she continues to work hard everyday to progress as a player. We look for her to not only lead on the field but also in the training environment, and I am very excited about having her here with us.”
Yiantsos headed to the college ranks at Drexel in 2005 and started 19 games. Her four goals and 14 points were the top marks for her team, and her six assists set a school record. She then followed up her freshman season with one of the best years in program history during her sophomore campaign. In 18 games, she led the Dragons in points (12), goals (4), assists (4), shots (41) and shots on goal (17). She was named the team Most Valuable Player, and her 13 helpers in two seasons set the career record for Drexel. Yiantsos picked up the pace even further at the beginning of her junior year, railing out seven points in six games before succumbing to a knee injury that cost her the season. After receiving a medical hardship waiver due to that injury, she had her best year at Drexel this past fall, tallying 18 points on seven knocks and four assists. The 60 points she amassed for the Drexels are already a school record, with the Vorhees native set return to Philadelphia after this summer.
"Aleka is an outstanding talent, and she is tremendously versatile,” Wildcats President Kevin McDermott commented. “She can play forward, outside mid or outside back, and she is equally as strong at all three positions. Her first few steps are explosive. We are very happy to have her on our team this year!"
Yiantsos is a graduate of Eastern Regional High School in Gibbsboro. During her youth career, she was a member of the 2003 Regional Premier League championship team and led her club team to the national semifinals that year.
After opening the 2009 season with four consecutive road contests, the Wildcats will make their home debut at Mercer County Community College on Sunday, June 7th, when they host the Boston Renegades at 4:00 p.m. Tickets for that opener are available now by calling 732-963-9769.
