Lesnar and dos Santos are vying for a heavyweight title shot.
Heavyweight Showdown Following The Ultimate Fighter 13
When this season of The Ultimate Fighter concludes, Mixed Martial Arts fans will be treated to an intriguing fight between former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar (5-2) and the heavy-fisted Junior dos Santos (12-1) at UFC 131. The two heavyweight contenders are currently serving as coaches on the 13th edition of the UFC reality series, and the winner of their June 11th fight will set himself up for a title shot against current champion Cain Velasquez (9-0).
“Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos are two of the most explosive heavyweights in the game, and I give both of them a lot of respect for taking this fight,” UFC President Dana White stated. “Brock wanted the quickest way back to a title shot, and he’s willing to go through dos Santos to do it. Junior could have waited around for his shot at the belt, but, as a true fighter, he didn’t want to sit around, and now he faces one of the toughest guys in the game. This is going to be one of the biggest heavyweight fights in years, and it’s guaranteed to be all-action from start to finish.”
This showdown will take place at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, marking the second show of 2011 in Canada for the UFC. The venue, formerly known as General Motors Place, is hosting its second card for the promotion after UFC 115: Liddell vs. Franklin was held there last June. The show was highly successful, with 17,669 spectators on hand and producing a gate of over $4.2 million.
“We are pleased to have the UFC return to Rogers Arena,” said Harvey Jones, Canucks Sports & Entertainment Vice President & General Manager. “We are committed to providing a world class experience for all of our guests at each and every event we host. We recognize British Columbians’ passion for sports entertainment, and the UFC and (Rogers Arena) are excited to be able to host this event again this year.”
Tickets for UFC 131 go on sale this Saturday, April 16th, and seats are available through TicketMaster. Additional fights confirmed for the card include a middleweight affair between Demian Maia (14-2) and Mark Munoz (10-2), Kenny Florian (15-5) taking on Diego Nunes (16-1) in featherweight action, Shane Carwin (12-1) versus Jon Olav Einemo (6-1) in a heavyweight bout and Mac Danzig (21-8-1) battling Donald Cerrone (14-3, 1 NC) in a lightweight contest.
