Joel Julio Facing Antwone Smith in Main Event

Main Events CEO Kathy Duva has confirmed that ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights will be returning to Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on May 20th. The card, headlined by a welterweight feature between Joel Julio (36-4, 31 KOs) and Antwone Smith (20-2-1, 12 KOs), will be the second boxing show to take place in AmeriHealth Pavilion, which is the auxiliary facility at the venue.

"Julio and Smith is a perfect fight to headline the next installment of the Brick City Boxing Series at Prudential's AmeriHealth Pavilion," Duva remarked. "Two extremely popular fighters who are at a crossroads in their careers will meet in a significant bout that might very well determine both of their futures. The winner likely will go on to challenge for the world title in what has become a wide open welterweight division. A great deal is on the line, and, as always, the fans can expect another great night of Brick City excitement and entertainment in the ring."

The main event pairing between Julio and Smith is being co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment, who manages Smith. Main Events handles the career of Julio.

Other bouts on the card are currently being negotiated, but Main Events did announce some of the fighters who are slated to appear on the bill. Undefeated welterweight and former U.S. Olympian Sadam Ali (12-0, 7 KOs) of Brooklyn, Jersey City native Jose Peralta (5-1, 3 KOs), East Hanover welterweight Vinny O’Brien (2-0, 2 KOs) and unbeaten lightweight Tyrone Luckey of Middletown are among the local boxers who are targeted to compete on the undercard.

This will be the second trip by Friday Night Fights to Newark. On July 16th of last year, current IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Zab Judah defeated Jose Santa Armando Cruz via a third round stoppage in the feature bout, while Sadam Ali recorded an impressive TKO win over Julias Edmonds before the Judah encounter.
