Malignaggi and Ali will both be honored by the Red Bulls on Sunday.
MLS Club Plans Jersey Presentation for this Sunday
Highly talented welterweight boxers Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi (29-4, 6 KOs) and Sadam “World Kid” Ali (12-0, 7 KOs) have long been turning heads in the world of boxing, and even the soccer community is taking notice. This Sunday, the duo will be getting honored by the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS), complete with a pre-game jersey presentation and in-game viewing from the owner’s suite.
“I’m excited to be able to go out to the new stadium in support of the Red Bulls,” Malignaggi said of Sunday. “I’m excited to get out there on the field.”
Malignaggi made his debut as a welterweight this past December, scoring a dominant sixth round TKO over Michael Lozada (37-8-1, 30 KOs) in Quebec. He followed up that performance with another impressive outing in April when he rolled to a 10-round unanimous decision victory over a very game Jose Miguel Cotto (32-3-1, 24 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Prior to moving up in weight, the Magic Man enjoyed an outstanding career in the junior welterweight division, winning the IBF, WBO and NABO Championship.
Ali, a former U.S. Olympian and skyrocketing talent in the welterweight division, shared the same sentiments that Malignaggi did of the occasion.
“I’m excited to be invited out to the stadium, and it’s definitely going to be a good time,” Ali remarked. “I really enjoy seeing athletes be successful in their particular craft. Me, I’m successful with boxing, and I know how much work it takes to succeed at the professional level. I’m looking forward to seeing that on Sunday in a different sport.”
The World Kid has been extremely active since turning professional in 2009, starting up his career with 12 consecutive victories, with seven of those wins coming by way of knockout. He has quickly become one of the top must-see fighters in the game and has already found himself having some significant difficulty in finding opponents. Ali will next step into the ring on May 20th at Prudential Center against John Revish (9-3-2, 8 KOs) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as part of ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights.
A man who has played a key role in the careers of both fighters is boxing veteran Anthony Catanzaro, who serves as the manager to Malignaggi and a top member of Team Ali. He also voiced his pleasure in what the Red Bulls were doing.
“I am excited to bring two great fighters whose careers I am involved to Red Bull Arena,” Catanzaro stated. “I have seen many games at the stadium, and it is a charming place.”
The Red Bulls will be opposite Chivas USA on Sunday, with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m.
