Toms River Native Signs with Team
Sky Blue FC (3-3-3, 12 points) of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) officially announced on Friday the signing of defender Sheree Gray, a product of Penn State University and native of Toms River, New Jersey. Bringing to Sky Blue FC prior WPS experience with Saint Louis Athletica, Gray will now look to make a difference for the professional club that calls the Garden State its home.
“Sheree has been training with us all season, and she has earned this spot on our roster,” Sky Blue FC head coach Jim Gabarra stated. “She is a very talented player with good speed, and she definitely possesses good technical abilities as well. She can also play in both the back and the midfield, and that type of versatility is something we really need right now.”
After becoming a three-time All-State selection and two-time Parade All-American at Toms River South High School, Gray then proceeded to have a very successful career at Penn State University. The former NSCAA Third Team All-American and All-Big Ten honoree was also on the Hermann Trophy watch list prior to her senior year in Happy Valley. The New Jersey native has competed for the U.S. National Team at the U-19 and U-21 level, and she additionally spent time in camp with the full national team.
“Sheree is a tactically aware player who will immediately contribute for us,” assistant coach Rick Stainton remarked. “She comes from the Toms River area, where she was one of the most recognized and highly touted players in the area, and it is nice to add another local connection to our team. Sheree will provide us with a lot of speed, and she is also very good on the tackle. Her previous WPS playing experience is another added bonus, and we look forward to her making an impression with us.”
After a bye this weekend, Gray will join Sky Blue FC as it returns to action for a road pairing with the Philadelphia Independence on Wednesday, July 6th. The team then returns home to Yurcak Field on Saturday, July 9th, to host magicJack SC at 7:00 p.m.
