Federal Hockey League
Adds Franchise in Ontario

League Schedules Press Conference on Friday to Announce New York Club

Syracuse, N.Y. (Thursday, March 11, 2010) – The Federal Hockey League (FHL), which plans to launch later this year, announced a fourth team this past week and has scheduled a press conference for next Thursday in Vestal, New York, to announce its fifth club. The Ontario-based Akwesasne Warriors will drop the puck this fall, and the name of the New York team is expected next week.

“I can’t help but feel excited about today’s events in Akwesasne,” FHL Commissioner Don Kirnan said of the Warriors. “The launching of the Akwesasne Warriors franchise was another strong event for the Federal Hockey League. Team owner Basem Awwad put together an exciting and informative program. There was tremendous media coverage from the local and national services, as well as representation from community officials and members of the chamber of commerce.”

Awwad is a local businessman and hockey enthusiast in Ontario, and the Warriors will be his first venture into professional sports. It was also announced that the General Manager of the team would be Pat Post, a former hockey player who played briefly in the All American Hockey League.

The press conference planned for next Thursday will be at the Quality Inn in Vestal, New York. Some of the announced attendees include Kirnan and Norman Snyder, the owner of the Broome County franchise. Any media members who would like to attend the event can contact Snyder directly at (315) 447-9839.

The FHL will play a 60-game schedule at the single A level, with a starting time planned for November. The other three clubs who have committed for the 2010-11 FHL season are the Danbury (CT) Whalers, Rome (NY) Frenzy and Thousand Islands (NY) Privateers. Additional markets that could receive teams in the upcoming year include Ottawa, Brooklyn and Philadelphia.
